Epilepsy is a chronic neurodegenerative disease, and more and more evidences show that its pathological progress is closely related to peroxynitrite (ONOO-). However, since there are few in vivo imaging probes for the determination of ONOO- in the brains of patients with epilepsy, the understanding of its function is also very challenging. The team of Professor Liu Hongke and Professor Qian Yong from Nanjing Normal University and the team of Professor Zhu Hailiang from Nanjing University have jointly proposed a new near-infrared imaging probe (ONP), which has high sensitivity and selectivity and can be used to trace the brain Endogenous ONOO-. Experiments have proved that the probe can effectively monitor the dynamic changes of the endogenous ONOO- in the epileptic brain, and has good temporal and spatial resolution. Research results show that the higher concentration of ONOO- in the brain of patients with epilepsy is related to severe neuronal damage and epilepsy; and curcumin can effectively eliminate the excessive increase of ONOO- to further protect neuronal cells.
